The average size board is 7.75, now if your going to be vert skating or getting a great deal of speed (like down hill) it would be better to go with a wider board for stability. And so you dont get speed wabble. So the best thing to do is go look at a couple boards and stand on them to find which is more comfortable for you. My personal favorite for boards is a blank mini logo, I love mini logos. They are great boards. And i also like zeros. They are more expensive boards, but they are very much worth it.
Bend both your knees slightly when you skate - even if its just gliding. Bending your knees will keep your feet/skates right under you. Keep your head up - dont look at the ice. Dont lean too much forward, in other words dont stick out your rear. Keep your arms out in front of you at 10:10 or 2:50 as on a clock, they are your balancing poles. The more you skate, the more balanced youll get.
Maybe your child might be spending a lot of time in front of the T.V. or more likely on the computer playing video games. Getting on skates either at the rink or outside will give your child a fun way to move around and strengthen the legs and heart. Teaching your child to roller skate, instills into your child a sense of balance. As a child gets older, there are a lot of sports that require balance. Bicycling, skate boarding, etc will be learned a lot easier if they have first learned to skate. But most importantly learning to skate early in the life of a child helps the child to increase their confidence and opens the possibilities for them to experiment with other sports and activities they might never have tried.
