Use your knees and ankles to accelerate. While gliding, have both knees and ankles slightly bent. Turn one foot out to push with the side of your blade and extend that leg -- straighten the leg that you are pushing with. Then bring your feet back together in with the knees and ankles slightly bent again. Then repeat the whole process by pushing with the opposite leg. Remember to use your knees and ankles. You accelerate by bending and extending your joints.
The average size board is 7.75, now if your going to be vert skating or getting a great deal of speed (like down hill) it would be better to go with a wider board for stability. And so you dont get speed wabble. So the best thing to do is go look at a couple boards and stand on them to find which is more comfortable for you. My personal favorite for boards is a blank mini logo, I love mini logos. They are great boards. And i also like zeros. They are more expensive boards, but they are very much worth it.
