It is the default position you take and will have for the majority of the time. Its easy to get lazy or otherwise stop thinking about your position on the board, but dont let yourself do this. Have people watch you if necessary as well so that you can make sure you are doing the right thing. You want to learn tricks properly the first time too. You want your dominant foot to be the one in the rear. This will allow you to balance yourself better but also use your weight more accurately to maneuver yourself around on the board. If you dont already know your dominant foot, you can determine which one it is by falling forward. Whichever one you use to catch yourself from falling on the floor is the one youre looking for.

You might not be aware of it but by just standing on the ice you are using your abs. But I would also recommend that you do yoga and pilates as off ice training for balance. Now you can use the new revolutionized Wii fit balance board; it is awesome. It features four main areas: yoga, strength training, aerobic exercise, balance training. It is not a replacement for off-ice training, however, it can be helpful.

So now put one foot on the skate and use the other to push off. Keep your heel on the sole restrictor to have good control and keep your foot in the centre of the deck to have accurate balance so there would be no chance of tipping on one side.

Stand on one foot with your other foot held up but not touching your leg, arms outstretched to the side as you would in skating, head held up. When you can do that for 30 seconds on each leg, repeat it with your eyes closed. If you have no problem with that, buy a wobble board, a half foam roller, a BOSU board, anything that makes balance harder as you practice your way to better balance. Do basic core exercises - crunches for instance. A strong core makes balance easier.
